5Orbeez ButterflyAug 17, 2010
By MoMa
We bought this along with the Magic Maker so our 10 year old granddaughter could have something to do on her own and she made the most beautiful butterfly using all of the colors. It's now proudly on her bookshelf in her room for all to see!

4Great GiftDec 19, 2011

I bought this from my niece age 10, along with the Orbeez maker, and she had a blast with it! As an adult, I am not sure I completely understand the fascination, but I will have to say she enjoyed making the Orbeez, and then playing with the color arrangements within the Butterfly. That is the part that counts!

4Fun but can be messy!Jan 09, 2012
By Susan "bookworm"
Orbeez start out as tiny as seeds and, after being submerged in water for 3 hours, grow to the size of a small marble. That part is pretty cool and gives an opportunity to teach kids about polymers. The downside is, they are very slippery and never dry out, so they are kind of hard to handle. They make a huge mess if you spill them on the floor! But they work well to fill the Butterfly container and there was PLENTY to spare. My 5-year old daughter layered colors in a clear glass jar and it looks very pretty. They include a booklet with games you can play with the Orbeez, but given the fact that they're so slippery, I don't think playing with them is very easy. We "grew" them on Christmas Day and they are still the same size. Apparently if they dry out, you just add water and they will grow again. So overall, it's a fun little experiment/craft to do, but there's not much use for them beyond the initial fun (aside from decoration).

5Super Cool, Super Fun, Super Absorbent, Educational and Colorful too!Dec 29, 2011

When I saw this I had never heard of it, and it was a pretty cheap price, so I checked into it and watched the video, and I thought it looked like something my 5 year old would love. It looked "messy", involved water, "grew" when you added water (like a lot of toys she loves), bounced, and so on, and for the price, even if it totally sucked or became "one use", it was way worth it. It isn't nearly as messy as I thought, AT ALL. Each pack includes 150 Orbeez(doesn't seem like that much is there, but thats what it says), which you add 2 cups of water to and allow to sit for 3-4 hours. First of all, I think 1 cup of water would have been fine and half that time sufficient, because right away they start to swell, and we kept checking back, and they seemed ready to go in about 2 hours. Also, the directions note that if you add a "pinch" of salt, Orbeez will not grow as big but will stay fresher longer, so we did this, they still seemed to grow as big as on the package and we didn't note any sizeable difference, we definitly want them to last as long as possible! We set out several bowls and cups so as to make each color seperately, that way Ella could choose to mix the colors later if she wanted and could start with them seperately to begin with. Blue and green are very iridescent, and I teased her that they must have plucked the very blue out of her eyeballs, which led to her joking that her eyeball fell out, they are that bright and pretty-colored. It also came with clear, which was a surprising favorite of Ella's because she said it looked like treasure, and I said, "You mean diamonds?" to which she nodded. They are the easiest to blend in and "lose" however, so my least favorite. Black doesn't really stand out one way or another. And the purple and pink are also very pretty colors, but again the green and blue practically glowed and looked 3D for their iridescence, they are that beautiful.

Also included with the set is, of course, the Butterfly container, which included a top and bottom to close the Orbeeze up in. There is also a tray, which could be counted as two trays or as a top and bottom to one tray, to hold and sort additional Orbeez. After our Orbeez swelled, we used a strainer to drain the additional water, and mixed them all in a big bowl, as Ella requested, to make one big rainbow of colors, where they have been since. They are squishy, like "fish eggs", but not really gross, just really cool feeling. I can't resist sticking my hands in them when I walk by. They don't leave your hands with a residue after, just "wet", as they only hold water. They include also a very interesting packet; this includes the instructions, other products by Orbeez, but also explains what exactly Orbeez are, which I myself found super interesting. Your kids may not, but I think they're pretty neat. They're basically the same things used in diapers (to absorb wetness and expand without leaking) as well in agriculture to help with droughts in dry season. In fact, you can use your Orbeez to decorate vases artistically while watering household plants, an idea I found really creative and visually stunning and showed to my daughter who immediately wanted flowers! There are all sorts of fun things and ideas in the brochure of things you can do with the fun little balls, games to play, and even the best way to dispose of them; not in the trash or garbage disposal - but in your own garden as that is what they are originally designed for.

Also while they are non-toxic these are definitly not made to eat and should stay away from little mouths, and animals alike (my dogs tend to chase the bouncy balls when they get away from Ella). If one eats too many of them it is advised you get them to the ER right away with a copy of the brochure and samples of the Orbeez so the staff there knows what they're dealing with.

While they are really rather durable, if you squish them between your fingers really hard, they will burst; as my daughter has found out and shown me already. She's too curious for her own good! I am not sure if they shrink back eventually after the water evaporates and they can be re-used or not, this review is based solely on the first use, but even if it is a one-time use it is totally worth it for the price I paid and what you get for it holds 15x its weight in water and keeps holding it for a long time to come (which is great for watering plants, especially if you're going to be out of town!) I can just see so many uses for these other than as a child's toy! As an art's and crafts project it is a lot of fun for decorating jars, candle's and especially the vases. Even the included games sound like a lot of fun! But really, just making and playing with the things are a blast and squishing them between your fingers (and toes I imagine!) is therapeutic! Highly recommended! Not nearly as messy as it looks and the only real mess it poses is water, which is so easy to wipe up with a towel. My daughter loves these and I know I will be picking up more sets soon! The butterfly design itself is pretty and girly like her, she loves butterflies, and its a nice case to store them in and other treasures in the future. :)

4grand daughter loves it!Jan 16, 2011

I can only say that before Christmas this was all my grand daughter talked about and boy was she happy when Santa brought it. There are very very small pieces so not recommended for smaller children. On a whole they are all the rave!Orbeez - Butterfly
