Misleading productDec 26, 2009
By Willow R.
"Just a fan"
My seven year old daughter got this toy for Christmas. In commercials and on the box, the water tank and pieces inside look large and fun. In reality, the tank is tiny, only about half the size of the box it comes in. It's only four inches tall! The mermaid is only one inch long. The "cove" reaches almost the top of the water, so the "towers" are almost impossible to make. It's hard to do anything fun with the sand because everything is so small. It just creates a mess with water spilling everywhere and sand floating on the top. It also only comes with two colors of sand. I would not recommend this toy.

No worse than Play-DoughFeb 07, 2010
By B Ahrens My daughters saw this on TV and really wanted this for their 5th birthday. I remember playing with Magic Sand as a child and really enjoyed it, so I figured what the heck. So, after reading the other reviews, here are some things you might want to know about our experiences.
NOTE: This is not a toy I would let my kids use unsupervised. They needed help filling the container with water, moving the nozzle from one bottle of sand to another, etc.
1. The container for the Mermaid is very small, but it is also filled with water, so any bigger and I would be worried it would make a huge mess if it got tipped over.
2. This is sand they are playing with, so sand did get all over. I had them play on a dishtowel, but there was sand on the floor and the table when they were done. Play-Dough leaves the same amount of mess everywhere too. I used the DustBuster when we were done.
3. If you are going to let them use more than 1 color at a time, it is going to get all mixed up. Just like Play-Dough gets mixed up if you use more than 1 color. You just have accept that it is going to get mixed together and move on.
4. It is hard to control the nozzles without practice, but the girls got better as they played with it. It is fun to make decorations underwater and poke the sand around. They did not mind that they weren't good at it the first time, they wanted to try it again and again.
5. Some of the sand does float around on the top of the water and it can be hard scoop it up. We noticed that playing with sand in a plastic container, like the mermaid tank, was easier than it was in a glass container. The sand "stuck" to the sides of the plastic container, making it easier to clean up the sand that was floating on top. I seemed to care more about the sand floating than my girls did.
6. Getting the sand back in the bottles while playing required my help. The funnels that come with the toy are really small, so it was difficult for my girls to get the sand back in the container on their own without it going all over the table. So, instead I used our kitchen funnel which was much easier for all of us to use.
7. When it was time to put it away, I put a paper towel in the bottom of my kitchen colander and emptied the container into the colander. The paper towel held the sand and the water went down the drain. Then I just poured the sand into the containers again using my kitchen funnel. It was pretty easy to clean up since I wasn't concerned about the colors being mixed.
All and all, they had fun and we will use it again soon.

One Big Mess!!Dec 31, 2009
By PVK Santa should be ashamed of himself for unloading this piece of junk on Christmas day! Trying to clean the sand out of this thing is nothing short of a mess. I had colored granules of sand all over my kitchen table and floor. In an effort to get the different colors of sand back in their respective containers, quickly led to the realization that this is near an impossible task. Now there's just one color of mixed sand - not like it matters because this thing won't see the light of day again in my house. Santa owes me at least four hours of relaxation time: for clean-up and pain and suffering.

A waste of money!Jan 05, 2010
By noahsmomma I bought this as a gift for my five year old and as soon as he lost interest, which was in about five minutes, I tossed the whole thing. The sand is horrible. It makes a huge mess everywhere, and my husband who is a woodworker swears it is made out of sandpaper grit. It left marks all over my kitchen table. I would not want this product to get anywhere near my childs eyes. It is extremely irritating just to the skin. Terrible to clean up, and not fun to use...don't waste your money. Moon sand is a much safer and more fun alternative!

WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!!!!!Apr 09, 2010
By patuny My daughter wanted this for her birthday so badly after seeing the commercials for it! We got it for her and she was just ecstatic! That however, was short lived. The toy is tiny, difficult to fill and a HUGE mess! She was unable to "sculpt" anything and the cardboard scenery on the back fell apart as soon as it got wet. She liked that the sand, when removed from the water, became instantly dry. But, beyond that, it was a complete disappointment. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS!!!!! I'm going to try to take it back; it's that ridiculous and cheap!
